NFC attendance system

Quick Attend: faster classroom attendance with NFC.

A focused attendance system that assigns NFC tags to students and lets an instructor scan them with a phone, turning an attendance check into a fast digital workflow.

  • Next.js
  • TypeScript
  • Python
  • Azure Functions
  • Azure Web PubSub
  • Azure Storage
  • NFC

The problem

Attendance should not interrupt the class.

Manual roll call takes time, creates follow-up work and makes it harder to see a reliable attendance state while a class is beginning.

01

Slow manual checks

Instructors need a quick way to confirm attendance without working through a full roster by hand.

02

Student identity at the point of entry

A tag scan needs to resolve to the right student before it can be used as an attendance event.

03

Delayed visibility

The instructor needs the current attendance result to appear in the classroom workflow as scans occur.

The solution

A phone scan becomes a live attendance event.

Quick Attend pairs an assigned NFC tag with a student, processes scans through Azure services and surfaces the current attendance state in a Next.js interface.

Tag assignment

Associate a distributed NFC tag with the appropriate student before classroom use.

Instructor scanning

Use a phone to scan a student's NFC tag and initiate the attendance workflow.

Serverless processing

Azure Functions written in Python handle attendance events and the application workflow.

Live classroom view

Azure Web PubSub delivers attendance updates to the Next.js interface while Azure Storage persists application data.

Architecture

An Azure-backed flow from NFC tag to attendance view.

The architecture connects NFC scans from an instructor's phone to Azure Functions, persistent Azure Storage and real-time updates through Azure Web PubSub for the Next.js frontend.

High-level architecture supplied for the portfolio. It illustrates the attendance flow while omitting private configuration, credentials and student data.

How I approached the build

A deliberate path from workflow to operation.

The architecture is only useful when it supports a practical sequence of engineering decisions.

  1. 01

    Prepare the student-tag association

Establish the tag-to-student relationship so the scan can be interpreted in the correct attendance context.

  2. 02

    Capture the classroom scan

Use the instructor's phone as the practical scanning surface for the NFC attendance action.

  3. 03

    Process and distribute the event

Use Python Azure Functions for the event workflow, Azure Storage for persistence and Azure Web PubSub for live updates.

  4. 04

    Keep the interface current

Present the attendance state in Next.js so the instructor can see the result as the class check-in progresses.

Engineering focus

What this project demonstrates.

Practical NFC workflow

A digital attendance process built around the simple physical action of scanning an assigned tag.

Azure event architecture

Serverless Python functions, managed storage and real-time messaging combined around a focused operational event.

Real-time product delivery

A Next.js interface designed to reflect attendance changes as the instructor works.
